Verification

Verify a file

Check a file or fingerprint, read the result and troubleshoot a mismatch.

Check the exact bytes

Open Verify and choose File, SHA-256 fingerprint or Text. Drop or browse for the original file, paste a fingerprint, or enter text and select Fingerprint and check. File hashing happens in your browser.

The app's Verify page offers SHA-256 digest, Drop a file to verify and Hash and check. Both pages look up service records. For an independent chain check, use Direct Base verification.

For that independent check, download the Python verifier package (.zip) and its SHA-256 checksum. The package contains the required code; extract it and follow the guide with your receipt or proof JSON and Python 3.12+. The download and guide are available without an account.

Interpret the result

Matching record found means the service found an eligible record matching the fingerprint. It supports comparing the retained file with the digest in that record. It does not establish legal admissibility, authorship, ownership, identity or truth of the contents.

Dated file evidence can still support a timeline in a dispute. See Blockchain evidence in court for documented examples and what the courts considered.

A no-match result can mean the bytes differ, the record is not available to this lookup, or the submission has not reached the required state. Archived record excluded means a historical archived entry does not count as a current match. Temporary unavailability is not proof of a mismatch. Check Record statuses before taking further action.

Troubleshoot a mismatch

  1. Select the original file you recorded, not a preview, download conversion or revised copy.
  2. Check whether the file was edited, re-exported, re-saved or recompressed. A visually identical PDF or image can have different bytes. Changing only its filename does not change the bytes that are hashed.
  3. Compare the full SHA-256 value with your retained receipt. Do not compare a shortened display.
  4. For structured input, reproduce the original processing rule and exact canonical bytes.
  5. If lookup is unavailable, retain the evidence and try again later, or use Direct Base verification with a suitable finalized receipt.

Save the check result

Use Download verification report to save the service lookup as JSON, or Share result to share its link, when available. The report records the service response, not an independent chain check.
